Practice profile

Formed in 1994, Priestman Architects is a creative London based practice of architects and designers working on interior, residential, office, cultural and urban projects in the UK and abroad.

The practice is included in the Architecture Foundation’s directory of New British Architects, and as one of four UK practices in the RIBA/AD exhibition ‘Architecture on the Horizon’. Their work has received wide publicity in the design and national press.

Formed in 1994 by Matthew Priestman, the practice started with the design and completion of a new low-energy timber frame house in Herefordshire followed by many contemporary high-quality residential projects. The practice completed the much acclaimed showroom for Steelcase Strafor and the 40,000sqft London headquarters for Ted Baker PLC in 2000, and has completed many successful office projects.

Winning architectural competitions in Scotland and Denmark in 1994, invited design proposals for cultural buildings followed such as for the Danish State Archive and University of South Stockholm. In 2004 the practice won one of 3 prizes in an invited competition for the 650,000sqft New Guangdong Museum, China.

Recently the practice has acted as Architect and Project Manager for complex urban mixed-use projects in London, gaining valuable planning permissions for difficult sites, and completing projects such as a 35,000sqft scheme of 27 residential, live-work and office units in 2005.

Founding partner Matthew Priestman RIBA has a background as Project Architect for large scale projects including a 400,000sqft office building at Canary Wharf and high-rise developments in Hong Kong. Julia Hwang, partner, is an Interior Designer who worked on residential and commercial projects in London and Hong Kong.

With the excellent resources of central London on hand, the practice uses computer tools to develop designs and construction information and uses scale models extensively to investigate ideas and present their work.
