![]() Queensbridge Road, HackneyA former garment workshop and yard on a busy corner site in Hackney, East London has been radically transformed into a private interior/exterior living space. At ground floor level, the insertion of glazed screen between the ground floor and the resurfaced yard, creates a generous kitchen/living/dining space focused on a private screened courtyard. Here all activities, cooking, technology and storage, are pushed to the edges in the form of a telescoping worktop/bench which passes through the skin of the existing house, extending internal space into the external. The former yard becomes an external living room, potentially both separate from and an extension of the main body of the house.A new stair rises along the light soaked rear gallery wall to a bathing area situated on the open landing. At first floor level the back to back placement of a sleeping and bathing areas around a centrally positioned storage partition is evolved from the functional requirements of the client. |
