Orestaden New Town

Mixed use extension to city involving up to 3.5 million sqm developement, light railway, motorway interchange, canal systems, public open space and lakes. First Prize in international open competition

The 310 hectare site is situated on reclaimed land south of Copenhagen. The development iniative coincides with the new Oresund bridge connecting Denmark with Sweden.
The proposal sets up an integration of natural and built environments, phased and growing in complexity over a 30 year period. The natural infrastructure will include canals, lakes, parks and existing wetlands. The urban infrastructure will be established by a light rail system, a boulevard, and a series of buildings at the 0resund motorway interchange. Specific areas will gradually be developed for housing, education, employment and university expansion.
Structuring the site with open space results in denser urban areas close to ammenities. The changes in density and larger buildings create articulation in the town.
