Copenhagen University, Amager

220,000sqm masterplan for new campus. Prize winning competition entry which led to second stage commision in 1997.

Connections, flexibility and the unique qualities of the site are developed and optimised. The horseshoe arrangement of buildings around an open campus, gives a connection to adjacent neighbourhoods and the open common.
With a framework of perimeter buildings and pavillion-like buildings within, the masterplan gives a gradation of spatiality from controlled to informal. Thus 'order and freedom', 'organisation and creativity', 'society and the individual' are thematic contrasts.
Key public buildings, such as the Rigsarkiv, Royal Library, concert halls, and main auditorium articulate the masterplan. A layering of privacy, separated common areas and public space achieves various spatial qualities.
The landscaping is a pattern of differing vegetations carved by crossing paths. The primary water element flows through this environment and terminates in a reflecting pond in front of the Royal Library.
