Copenhagen Minimetro

Architects to the European Metro Group bidding for entire design and construct contract for the new £350m light rail system serving Orestaden and central Copenhagen, Priestman Architects were commissioned to design seven above ground light rail stations and elevated track treatments, working with Henning Larsens Tegnestue who designed the system's underground stations.
The concept of 'station room' is amplified, refined and enhanced. Comprising side planes tilted inwards by 3 degrees, the design of all four station types is based on the same cross section. The tilted walls give the Minimetro a specific and unique identity, with exciting and dramatic spaces exploiting the illusion of additional height and greater depth to the volumes. The deep, shallow and elevated stations are designed with two passenger entrances for easy access and minimum evacuation times, and to keep the spaces as open and accessible as possible.
The proposed elevated stations are a refinement of the Orestadsselkabet's proposals, giving improved access, column free platforms, increased glazing areas and a strong relationship with their canal setting. Contained by fully glazed end walls, two light and open stairs are provided at each end (as for the underground stations), allowing improved accessibility and flexibility. Either or both stairs are deemed fire escape routes.
