The Cloisters, Battersea

New-build development near Battersea Park for Sapcote Developments Ltd comprising 14 apartments and 1.5 storeys of B1/retail at ground level granted planning permission by Wandsworth Council January 2003, completed in 2005.

The scheme uses a small footprint in order to maximise the adjacent garden area as amenity space for the occupants, and so as to visually separate the building from historically sensitive (Conservation Area) existing buildings adjacent.
Responding to the urban dynamic of busy road and rail systems, the building’s form is also determined by the curved frontage and irregular geometries of the site.
This gives unusual plan arrangements, with living areas characterized by the sinuous quality of the external wall.
Elevations are composed of a random pattern of vertically orientated clear glass and colour-coated panels giving a kinetic texture of reflections, lightness and solidity.
Simple concrete frame and a compact single core make an efficient and cost effective building.
